The birr is the official currency of Ethiopia since 1976, although it was adopted in 1945 under that name but it was known as Ethiopian dollar. This is the currency that always had Ethiopia since the nineteenth century, except the period from 1936 to 1941, when the Italian lira was used because of the Italian occupation.
