The first krone was introduced in 1800. In 1873 a new krone was introduced and it remained in force until the end of the First World War. Denmark returned to the gold standard in 1924 but left it in 1931. Between 1940 and 1945 the krone was fixed to the reichsmark. At the end of the German occupation, Denmark returned to the krone which is the present official currency of that country. It is used by approximately 5 million seven hundred thousand people.
