INTRODUCTION TO THE CFP FRANC
The CFP franc was first introduced in 1945. It is the legal tender in the French Overseas Territories of the French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna and New Hebrides until 1982*. The acronym “CPF” corresponds to Colonies françaises du Pacifique which then was changed to “Pacific Financial Community”. At the present it is called “Comptoirs français du Pacifique” (French Financial Agreements of the Pacific). It is used by approximately 563 thousand nine hundred people. *The franc of the New Hebrides separated from the CFP franc. It was replaced by the Vatu (VUV) in 1982 when the territory gained its independence under the name of Republic of Vanuatu.
