INTRODUCTION TO THE MALDIVES RUFIYAA OR RUPEE
The Maldives rufiyaa or rupee was created in 1947 to replace the Sinhala rupee and since then it is the official currency of Maldives. However the first rufiyaa was introduced by the Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar (1648-1687) and there were silver coins which then were replaced by gold. During centuries 18th and 19th copper coins named “Laari” were minted. It is used by approximately 318 thousand people.
